4:42p NYC with Tom
Yesterday I looked at amazing, fantastic $1,000 women's shoes at Saks, bought a 100% Real Bug! shiny spider in lucite bracelet, stole a white yamaka from a wedding and wore it on my head and got confused and horrified looks from strangers, sat in Times Square and drank coffee and watched the tourists while they took in the electric mayhem all around us, tried and loved grilled corncakes with cheese in the middle and thought I was being so smart by putting my purse inside one of those free-magazine stands, essentially using it as a temporary locker while I ate my tasty pork which I placed on top of the stand. About 15 minutes later I panicked when I realized I left my purse inside the stand. It was still there when I ran back to it. Wonders never cease.

4:33p double sun dog
I just saw a double sun dog - I think!
You're like - huh? Look it up.
At least I think it's called a double sun dog. It wasn't a dog within a dog. It was the two bits of the halo to either side of the sun illuminated like a rainbow - that was normal - but then completely above the halo round the sun was the bottom of another circle and it was a brightly lit, thick ice bow (ice bow is my term - I didn't make up sundog). And it was as long as about an eighth of the circle.
I must find out what this phenomena is called. Because.

I want fried chicken and biscuits for dinner.

5:00p Some Twilight Parodies before I get Serious Again
Really well done. I wish SNL was like this all the time like they were back in the old days.
Oh and if you want to get really weird, follow this link at your own risk:
( Dear lord... )
Will Twilight fans hate it or get turned on by it? I dunno but stay tuned for some serious biz shortly.

11:34a Hood's Hero
NY Times: She Ran to Gunfire, and Ended It: Highly Trained Sergeant Brought Down Gunman at Fort Hood.
Pretty solid article (and commendable actions), though the NYT made it repeatedly clear that this was a Highly Trained Professional.*
* Do not try this as at home, leave it to the pros.**
** phanatic makes an excellent point in the comments about "active shooter protocol", so I shouldn't have been so quick to dismiss the author's phrasing.

10:29a Z?
Thanks to a bout of the flu, I slept through most of the day yesterday. I had a dream that involved meeting the cast of the early 1990s Zorro TV series at a highbrow restaurant, where they were all having a nice dinner together and invited me to join them.
At some point they stopped being the actors and became the characters, and started fighting with each other.

1:28a A Business Question About Guns
Does anyone know what the typical, retail mark-up on a firearm is? For example, say a given gun is retailing for $500; what price did the manufacturer most like sell that weapon for?
The reason I'm asking is because I have an idea for a gun, but I need to do some cost accounting equations to determine it's commercial viability. Any insight that those here could provide would be appreciated. Thank you.

1:16a The "No Guns" Insult
The Firearms Coalition: The "No Guns" Insult:
How does it make you feel when you start to walk into a business and see a "No Guns" sign prominently posted? Are you angry? Offended? Indifferent? How do you react? Do you just turn around and take your business elsewhere? Complain to the management? Just ignore it and go on with your business? The members of the Virginia Citizens Defense League take "No Guns" signs as personally offensive and they let their offense be known - to the business, to fellow VCDL members, and anyone else who'll listen - or read a web page. [...] Posting a "No Guns" sign is not a business decision about patron safety nor is disarming just a minor inconvenience. Such signs are a political statement and an insult and they should never go unanswered.

10:39a Slugs
I have a Marlin bolt slug gun with, of course, a rifled barrel. I have fired it at the range many times, but never in the field, and so far, I have achieved decent accuracy at close (25yd) ranges. I bought it mostly as a novelty a few years back; it's always kind of been the Recoil Challenge gun for a day at the range with friends, so I'm ashamed to say I never really paid attention to ammunition apart from making sure they were as heavy as possible for the desired comedic effect.
Now I find myself likely to hunt in a shotgun-only zone, so I would like to get a little more serious about accuracy. I have been told to always use rifled slugs in such a gun, and I have been told to never use rifled slugs in such a gun.
You folks are usually good for answers on this kind of thing...any experience on this one?
TIA.

8:21a
I had a dream last night concerning the advertisment for the television program "V". I have not seen it yet. Basically the ship arrives and when we look up the ship reads out the words on the bottom "Don't Panic" in a very H2G2 sort of way. I say how much this plot feels like Earth Final Conflict so far, and Da'an from the show of the same name says he loves that show. Anyway, the entire dream breaks down, it is shortly revealed that the ship may as well be filled with a coach bus full of college kids from a country like Belgium that just happen to be friends with some of my friends, therefore giving me vip access to their 'ship' and the dormitories. The people on the ship are very attractive.
I didn't say my dreams had to have a point.
